Heartland Paralegal Association offers continuing legal education programs for member and non-member paralegals, legal assistants, and paralegal students nine times per year.   Special events and volunteer opportunities will also be posted below.  If you are thinking about membership, we invite you to join us at one of our upcoming events!

Please note that registration for some events may not open until several weeks before the event.  Click show details next to each event to determine registration availability.

    Volunteer with Heartland Paralegal Association at Heart of America Shakespeare Festival and then stay and watch the show!  Registration closes soon so sign-up now!  Open to HPA members, and non-member paralegals, legal assistants, and paralegal students.  

    Volunteer event is “Hamlet” with the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival on Saturday, June 24th.  It is at Southmoreland Park in between Oak and Warwick and 47th and E. 45th Street, directly across the street to the west of the Nelson-Atkins’ front lawn.

    10-12 volunteers are needed to assist with the following:

    • Greeting and handing out programs
    • Raffle and drawing sign-up
    • Food and drink ticket sales
    • Handing out surveys
    • Audience counting
    • Reserved seat ushering

    Volunteers are asked to be in the park by 5:30PM.  All jobs are done when the show begins at 7:30pm (which volunteers are welcome to stay and watch), except for the ticket sellers who sell tickets until intermission ends around 9:30pm.  You may park anywhere on Oak or Warwick Streets and enter through the main Festival gates. 

    HPA members may register one adult guest.  Spots are limited so register now!  Registration deadline is June 18th.  Questions about this event should be directed to Community Outreach Chair, Julie Gast.

    Speaker:  Norma Fordham, Attorney and JCCC Professor

    Forensic Science & the Law

    Presentation Highlights

    • Summary scope of forensic science
    • Current state of the discipline
    • Acceptance of scientific evidence by the courts
    Norma Fordham is an attorney and a JCCC Paralegal Studies Program professor.  She specializes in teaching Legal Research and Civil Litigation.  Depending on the semester you can also find her teaching Forensic Science and the Law, a course she developed for the program.
    Norma earned her Juris Doctorate from University of Missouri Kansas City and did graduate work in Forensic Anthropology at University of Kansas.  She has also attended multiple field schools providing training skeletal trauma, death scene investigation, and mass fatality investigation.

    Dinner and CLE:  $20.00 HPA Members and $23.00 Non-Members   

    Select dinner entree when registering:

    • Kenilworth Club - grilled chicken, bacon, cheddar, swiss, tomato, lettuce, and garlic mayo w/ french fries
    • Pork tenderloin - lettuce, tomato, onions, pickle, and horseradish w/ french fries
    • I'm a vegetarian

    Dinner includes entree, side salad, dessert, water, tea, coffee, and pop.

    Check-in available at 5:30 p.m.

    Join HPA at Starlight Theater to take tickets and handout programs prior to the September 9th showing of Grease.  Volunteers are invited to stay and watch the show for free!  Our service at this event is to benefit Hope House.

    Due to a limited number of spaces, this event is first open to HPA members only.  If spots are still available as we near the show date, volunteers may be allowed one guest (18+) on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    A waitlist is available if the event fills.  Because of this, if you register to attend and are later unable to make it, please cancel your reservation so that another member may attend.

    Volunteers must wear a white shirt and khaki pants, skirt, or shorts.
